SEX, SEXUALITY AND GENDER DISCRIMINATION

Sex discrimination is where someone is treated less favourably because of their sex, or their circumstances e.g. being married or having children. As with racial discrimination, indirect discrimination is where an unjustified rule is applied to a job that makes it more difficult for one group (men or women) to comply than the other. For example it is illegal to sack a woman because she is pregnant.

It is also illegal to discriminate against someone in employment matters or vocational training because of their sexuality or because they are transgender.

If you think you have been unfairly treated (e.g. in your job interview, work, education, a shop etc.) because of your sex or sexual orientation, then contact the ACAS helpline (in employment matters), Castlegate, CAB or the Equal Opportunities Commission.
