DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION
It is against the law to treat people less favourably because of a disability. The law covers employment matters (although some employers are exempt) as well as the provision of goods, facilities and services. If you think you have been unfarily treated, call the ACAS helpline (in employment matters) or ask at Castlegate or CAB about the Disability Discrimination Act.
York and District Mind can advocate on your behalf if you feel you are being discriminated against on the grounds of mental health or by the mental health system.
York People First is a self-advocacy group run by and for people with learning difficulties, helping people to speak up for themselves.
Also, if you have a learning disability and are 18+, York Advocacy can offer you an independent advocate to help you speak up for what you want.
DISABILITY INFORMATION AND DISABILITY ACCESS
Many people in society have an impairment of some kind that affects the way they live their life. It may be visible or invisible, it may be physical, sensory, a learning disability or mental health problem.
People with disabilities are often disabled by society, rather than by their impairment. Society puts barriers in the way of people with impairments making it more difficult for them to use everyday services. Barriers are often physical (e.g. steps up to buildings). However, often the biggest barrier is ignorance and lack of commitment to changing things in society.
Disability Working Network and the Disability Service Team can help in accessing employment - see learning & working.
