CRISIS LOANS AND GRANTS
Jobcentre Plus gives out repayable ‘crisis’ and ‘budgeting’ loans and non repayable grants (e.g. Community Care Grants) from the Social Fund. There is no guarantee of getting money in most cases, but if you need a payment, make a claim.
Loans can be made for emergencies e.g. money until your benefits come through, extra living costs, paying for B & B if you are homeless, or paying rent in advance. Grants may be made for one off expenses e.g. if you have been homeless they may help with the cost of resettling in accommodation, or for certain travel costs, funeral costs and other one off costs.
If you are expecting a baby you are entitled to a Sure Start Maternity Grant of £500 if you are on Income Support or Income-based JSA. If you are on Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit ask Jobcentre Plus if you qualify for the grant. You can claim from 11 weeks before the baby is due up to 3 months after it is born.
